Wisconsin Institute for Discovery - UW Madison
A Landscape of Wisconsin Discovery

Wisconsin Institute for Discovery, 330 N. Orchard St. Madison | June, 2022 | Co-Design and Production with Sharon Tang and Alicia Rheal

This mural is rich with meaning and represents an intersection among arts, sciences and technology. The work includes embedded QR codes that link to even more information curated by the University of Wisconsin. The historical scientists and anonymous figures show the breadth of discovery by Wisconsin Scientists - some celebrated and others underrepresented or yet unrecognized. The landscape is based on the WI driftless region and holds patterning that represents different scientific fields, accomplishments and themes.

This collaborative design was led by Sharon Tang who is also a UW Scientist in training. We conducted interviews with current UW scientists and parsed through the contributions of a plethora of accomplished scientists and educators that the University hoped to see represented. Sharon guided the process of distilling the scientific information into our collaborative design that captures many experiences and captivates an audience. We engaged a artist Yvette Pino to help us screenprint the QR codes onto the hand-painted mural.
